Welcome

Welcome to “World Nativities”, where nativity sets from 177 different countries are shown, as a part of the private collection of Fernando Pardo de Santayana.

The value of the collection lies in the relevant number of countries represented. Do not expect to find neither master pieces nor expensive ítems. All the sets are very plain.

The main objective of the collection is to witness, through the small figurines that make up the nativity sets, mangers, nativities or crèches, that the Christian faith has reached all confines of the world , mainly through the admirable work of the missionaries.

Being this our purpose, we have allowed ourselves the license to include a limited number of icons, knowinglly that they are not nativities in the strict sense, but this is the way some countries – mainly those of Orthodox faith – express their devotion to the mystery of the Birth of Christ.

Since 1223, when Saint Francis of Assisi organized the Christmas Mass with a nativity scene that included live animals, , the plastic representation of the Nativity has been deeply ingrained among the Christians, as the artistic expression of a beautiful and tender tradition.
